It's Wrapping for Rescue Time! -- Tuesday December 1st, 2020

#WrappingforRescue

It's Wrapping for Rescue Time!

Volunteers needed to wrap gifts!

Have a couple of hours to give?

This is an enjoyable event and a great way to kick-off the holiday season - bring your family and friends to help save a life!

A note about the times - we are committed to the stores from the start time (beginning of first shift) through the end time (end of last shift). Time slots are somewhat flexible within this range, so if there is a time you are available, but it's not shown as an option, PLEASE contact us directly, and we will make it work!

Can't volunteer, but want to help?

Stores provide the basics - table, chairs, scissors, tape...we NEED donations of wrapping paper, tags, ribbon, and bows for our wrapping kits!

Did you adopt from TSBR?

This is the time of year to bring your Ambassadog to an event and help us raise money to save more lives!

What is an Ambassadog, you may ask?

These are well-behaved dogs adopted through TSBR that come out to "Wrapping for Rescue" to showcase the amazing and grateful lives we save every day (it helps that they can beg for donations!)! Ambassadogs should be friendly, outgoing, and love to be loved on. It sounds like a sporting breed to me!!!

Ambassadogs allow the general public to see first hand what amazing dogs are available through rescue and where their money goes! In short, they are the reason for Wrapping for Rescue!

Sign up for your Rockin' Holiday Ambassadog today!

Finding Your "Paw-fect" Companion -- Tuesday January 1st, 2019

Finding Your "Paw-fect" Companion

By: Cassandra Wind

Companion

Rescue dogs can be some of the most loving companions you will ever know. The first and most important step in choosing the right dog is to consider your own lifestyle, and how your future pet is going to fit into it. There are a number of factors to consider, including personal life, energy level, and amount of experience. Once you do that, you’ll be joining the 85% of dog owners who adopted their furry friends from shelters and rescues. If you’re not quite ready for a dog of your own, there are always great volunteer opportunities available to you until you are.

Personal Life

Before even visiting a shelter, it’s important to consider what kind of traits you want in your paw-fect companion. If you’re looking for a running buddy, you may want a younger, more energetic pup that can keep up with you in your next 5K. If you work long hours during the day, a more mature, laid back companion without separation anxieties may be best. Families with children may prefer a more docile pet for their rambunctious kiddos, and families without may prefer a dog they can shower with attention after a long day. Studies show that pet ownership can improve happiness by improving heart health, lowering stress and depression, and providing comfort - as long as you choose one that fits into your personal life.

Training Experience

A dog-owner-to-be should keep in mind how much experience they have with raising and training dogs when it comes to adopting a new one. How equipped are you to correct behavioral issues in your new pet? Five of the seven most common reasons that dogs are returned to shelters and rescues, according to a study by the American Humane Association, are due to behavioral issues perceived “unfixable” by the owner. However, most can be corrected with the right tools. A super chewer is a useful toy to pacify those that love to gnaw, and leash pullers can be persuaded to walk easier with treats and training sessions. But if you’ve been schooled in the art of behavioral correction, you’ll be better equipped to correct things like leash aggression and food guarding, giving you the option to see the potential beyond perceived behavioral hangups.

Household Emotions and Energy Level

Recent psychological studies have shown correlations between the emotional well-being of an owner and the behavior of their pets. Speaking to an expert will help you determine how to select a pet whose personality would best be supplemented by your own, rather than inadvertently choosing a pet who reacts negatively to the emotional climate in your home.

The energy level of your home can also play a big role in indicating which dogs will best fit your lifestyle. A shy dog may have a hard time with a loud and rambunctious crew,  but would blossom in the right calm and gentle household. Conversely, a high energy pup could use the stimulation of spirited playtime, but might become bored and destructive in a low-energy home.

Once you’ve taken all these things into consideration, the best way to make sure you fall in love with the right four-legged friend is to explain to a worker or volunteer at the shelter what exactly you’re looking for in your new dog in order to best fit your lifestyle. They will happily point you in the direction of all the dogs whose needs and personalities best fit your own, and you’ll be one step closer to bringing home your new best friend.

Garris the Grateful -- Friday March 31st, 2017

Garris

Hidy Ho Troopies!

I know, I know ~ you're thinkin' who the heck is this guy, all handsome and articulate. Right!

Or maybe you just don't remember me? After all I have been kinda relegated to the shadows.

That's me "Shadow Man" tee hee hee. Better than "Stinky cheese man" which my foster sisters Bean and Zinger called me when I showed up.

Don't worry though - you see I've spent my whole life in the shadows...yep mostly alone and well I don't mind being ignored for my brother from another mother "Gage" or that handsome little pupsqueak Navan. (Did anyone else notice they both had whiney hineys??)

I'm just content hanging out with my antlers - which for the record I ❤❤❤, or napping (nappies make you smarter), or eating my 3 or 4 meals a day (it's like a smorgasbord), or getting my special baths twice a week at "The Pampered Pooch" (those gals massage me for 20 or 30 minutes twice a week - whoa), or getting cookies every time I just look the direction of my foster peeps.

Nope - you see being ignored here is SOOO much better than my old spot. So I don't really need much attention to make me happy.

But there is this one thing that I'm worrying on. My foster mommers says that Monday (that's like day after tomorrows tomorrow or something like that) I have to have the first of two really BIG surgeries. They are so expensive I could buy food for all of my friends forever I think and so long that I will miss a whole day of cookies!

Mommers says I have to have it to get better because I'm really sick and it's the only thing that will keep me here.

You know what though - I've hurt for so long I don't really even notice. (I did always wonder what that goo inside my head was, lol) Unless of course you pet my headers or I try to get windies in the car, or if my foster sister paws me to play, or if I run really fast, or if I snoodle in my covers....

Then we went for a short walkabout and sat down on the deck to talk, just us two. She told me that there were some really brave 'lellow boys that came before me (like Harley and Heath and Woody and Moon...) and that she would be really proud of me if I would be brave too. Then she told me all the hard stuff that was gonna happen like, first I would go to the special surgeon and stay for a day or two. That it would hurt a whole lot...more than anything I've ever known, but that she promised they would help me not hurt too much all at one time.

Then I heard her say NO hard kibble. WUT! NO hard cookies. WUT! For 3 months. WUT!!!

Surely she must be joking??? But nope nope nope - she said it would make me hurt to chew.

My Troopie Angels "Marcia and Kaitlyn" were already getting me some yummy canned food to get me started next week. Hmmmm

I mean I went FOREVER without my kibble and cookies and I finally get some I REALLY REALLY ❤ and whamo. No fair I say!

She also said we were gonna try to learn sign language. But I told her my nose works just fine to smell cookies and my eyes work just fine to see my balls. What more is there ~ right WUBBA?

But at least now I know why everyone has been paying attention to my pals and not me. No one really wanted to tell
me the cookie part.

So you see, I could sure use some help being brave. I even made a list of questions to get us started...umm here goes:

  1. what are the best soft cookies - cause I gotta have cookies!
  2. do I get a pillow to lay my head on?
  3. where am I gonna get more special soft food...I mean 300+ cans of prescription food is A LOT!
  4. will ear muffs work so I can stick my head out of the window still?
  5. can someone teach me the sign for "Good Boy" cause I won't be able to hear Mommers tell me anymore
  6. will you still help me get my surgery #2 in May if I'm really brave for this one - I don't think I have saved enough pennies yet???

So that's a lot don't ya think!

But otherwise I'm just me ~ Garris the Grateful and I'm here in case anyone is bored and wants to write me back.

❤ Garris

Navan Update! -- Tuesday March 28th, 2017

Navan

Whew! that was quite an ordeal.

Poor guy...we just can't believe what it turns out he has been through.

What was thought most likely to be a congenital malformation very obviously was NOT that once they got him into surgery. (We've spared you the photos)

Instead, this little guy suffered from a very serious traumatic injury that literally broke his tail and left open wounds that filled with deep scar tissue - severe bite, run over by something, we can only speculate but WOWZA it had to be really painful when he was just a little dude. And to obviously not have received care for it is just heartbreaking.

The bad news is that he won't win any cute booty awards now.

The good news - they removed all of the broken tail and as much of the scar tissue as they could that was making his rectum shift north. This should help restore things to a more natural course and eliminate pain as he grows.

The even better news is that he is the most handsome, sweet Weimy boy around and he doesn't care that he lost his tail...now he just wags his whole behind!

How sweet is that. Navan will need a few weeks to heal up and put this "BEHIND" him  he will need some sussies to keep him busy while he heals, and would love a care package from some of his Troopies out there.

In no time he will be looking forward to meeting and greeting adopters.

Hey, Gage here! -- Monday March 27th, 2017

Gage

Hey, Gage here!

Things are going so good, I just gotta share all the things I’m learning.

First off, I love this living-in-a-house thing. But outside is good too, so I learned how to use a doggy door.

I’ve learned cats are just cats and not really anything to get excited about (and they’re not very fun to play with).

I’m learning about toys and how to play tug with my foster sister Kora. I learned that when I run around the house with a toy, it’s funny, but when I run around the house with things called “pants” it’s not as funny. Go figure!

I’ve learned that I don’t like to wear a cone, but I DO like not having a scratchy eye or an embarrassing booty ball.

I’m learning that it’s ok to lay in the yard, but not in the place they call a “flower bed.”

I also have to learn these things my foster mom calls “manners.” Not all that fun, but not too hard either.

Best of all, I have learned that when someone reaches toward my face it’s to give me love and kind words, not to hurt me. And when I roll on my back, someone rubs my belly (I really like this!).

Speaking of belly rubs, I think I’m going to go get me one right now.

Later!
Gage

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month -- Monday April 13th, 2015

Heartworm Risk

Don’t let “I didn’t know” be the reason your pet becomes heartworm positive.

Texas is one of the top states for heartworm infection. Heartworm, a serious and often fatal disease of dogs, cats, and other species of mammals, is preventable. And, with the beginning of a brand new mosquito season, to help raise public awareness, April is recognized as Heartworm Awareness Month.

Testing annually and keeping your pet on a monthly preventative is the ONLY way to prevent heartworms.  Many local vet clinics offer discounts for testing and heartworm prevention during the month of April - call your vet today!
